Exposure

One number, and it is right at the moment you look at it

Every platform you run knows its own exposure and nothing else. Adding those together by hand works until the week it matters, which is also the week nobody has time to do it.

CutWhat it answers
By instrument

Where the net position actually sits

By asset class

Whether a move in one market touches several books

By client

Which accounts are driving the number

By platform

Where a change would have to be applied

By counterparty

What is offset externally and what is retained

What makes it usable

Four properties, and without them it is a dashboard nobody trusts

Updated on the event, not on a timer

A position changes when a trade happens. Polling every few minutes means the number on screen is usually a little wrong, and always wrong at exactly the moment the market is moving.

Netted properly across sources

The same instrument held on two platforms is one position, not two rows. Aggregation that simply lists sources next to each other leaves the netting to whoever is reading it.

Valued consistently

Positions are marked using one price source per instrument rather than whatever each platform happened to use, so the total is a number rather than an approximation of several.

Drillable to the trade

Any figure on the desk can be opened down to the individual positions behind it. A number you cannot interrogate is one nobody will act on quickly.

See it live

One number, current at the moment you look

Positions aggregated across every platform and account sit in a single table, netted and valued consistently rather than listed source by source.

FAQ

Real-time exposure: common questions

6 short answers to what teams ask before a demo.

The exposure view is driven by events rather than polling, with a refresh target of <1 s. The distinction matters most during fast markets, which is exactly when a periodically refreshed number is furthest from the truth.

Yes, that is the point of it. Aggregation is designed around whatever mix of platforms you actually run. A risk view that only sees one vendor's systems is a platform feature, not a risk desk.

As one netted position, valued from a single price source. Presenting two rows and leaving the arithmetic to the reader is the failure mode this replaces.

Any figure drills down to the positions and accounts behind it. Speed of response depends on being able to interrogate a number rather than only observe it.

Those cover the clients on that platform and are blind to everything running alongside it. This aggregates across all of them, which is the only level at which firm exposure is a real number rather than an estimate.

It is shown as stale rather than silently excluded. A total that quietly drops a source is more dangerous than no total at all, because it looks exactly like a reduction in risk.

What is your firm carrying right now?

If answering means opening three systems and doing some arithmetic, the answer is that nobody actually knows.
